Kitty is determined to secure a husband in Conrad, her dashing but penniless childhood friend. Meanwhile, Percy’s fiancée, Laura, grapples with gendered expectations and her social reputation in the company of a talking seal. As romantic entanglements unravel and betrayals come to light, The Betrothed queers the classic marriage plot, satirizing power, ambition, and resistance with theatrical excess and spectacle.
