WP Theater’s Annual Gala 2023

WP THEATER ANNUAL 2023 GALA

On May 8, 2023, we toasted WP Theater’s 45th Anniversary Season at the Edison Ballroom at our Annual Gala. It was a dazzling event, with so many titans and talents of the American Theater gathered together to celebrate trailblazing Women+ artists and leaders.

The Gala was chaired by WP Board Members JOSEPH P. PETITO and RACHEL SUSSMAN and vice-chaired by MCJ AMELIOR FOUNDATION, BOND Theatrical, THE JOHN GORE ORGANIZATION, JAMES L. NEDERLANDER and NICK SCANDALIOS, JOSEPH P. PETITO, MINDY RICH, THE SHUBERT ORGANIZATION, INC., SHUCKED, LISA TIMMEL & DAVID MARKUS, BARBARA WHITMAN, and BETH WILLIAMS.

The evening was hosted by remarkable two-time Tony nominee, Pulitzer Finalist, and OBIE Award-winning Writer and Actress, HEIDI SCHRECK, as we honored President of the John Gore Organization and Chair of the Broadway League LAUREN REID and Academy Award-winning Actress, Singer, and Dancer ARIANA DEBOSE.

The night was full of exclusive appearances and performances from some of this year’s most celebrated and brightest stars. We opened with a brilliant jazz reinterpretation of “Bohemian Rhapsody” from recording artist and WP Lab Playwright, QUEEN ESTHER; then had the amazing cast from WP’s WEIGHTLESS back in town to give us a number from their Lortel Award and Drama Desk Award-nominated run; 2023 Tony Award-Winning Best Leading Actor in a Play, SEAN HAYES, was joined by GOOD NIGHT, OSCAR Producers and WP Gala Vice-Chairs, MINDY RICH, BARBARA WHITMAN, and BETH WILLIAMS, to give a special interview/roast; and we closed it off with a mind-blowingly spectacular number from SHUCKED, sung by the astonishing and 2023 Tony Award-Winning Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, ALEX NEWELL.

It was an incredible way to celebrate all of WP’s successes this year – with our biggest party of the year, where we raise the needed funds that allow us to continue amplifying marginalized voices, provide space for them to share their experiences and stories, and serve as a unique incubator for emerging talent. Our 2023 honorees are such phenomenal leaders and advocates, and we were thrilled to honor Lauren and Ariana, and have a room full of friends and colleagues to celebrate their extraordinary accomplishments and contributions to the industry. We are so grateful that forty-five years after its inception, WP proudly stands as the nation’s oldest and largest theater company dedicated to developing, producing, and promoting the work of Women+ artists at every stage of their careers.
