WP Space Program

The Space Program is an initiative to offer discounted space at WP Theater’s home @ 76th and Broadway and to provide affordable producing options for our artistic community.

Who is the ideal Space Program participant?

Our goal for the Space Program is to provide subsidized space to mission-aligned individual artists and small budget not-for-profit companies ($300,000 or less) who might otherwise not be able to produce because of the financial constraints of renting performance space.

The criteria below will also be a factor in participation:

*When we say Women+ we mean: cis women, trans, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming people and all gender identities which have been systematically oppressed throughout history in the theater and beyond.

What are the available dates for the Space Program?

Check back here for future Space Program Application dates. Email thespaceprogram@wptheater.org if you have any questions.

“The return engagement of Lightning Rod Special’s The Appointment literally would not have been possible without the partnership and support of WP via its Space Program.”

– Producers Erica Rotstein and Rachel Sussman

SPACE PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

Subsidized Rental Rate: $3,000 per week in our 108 seat theater (with brand-new seats!) which is less than 50% of WP’s regular rental cost. Rent includes access to our lighting and sound equipment package, all utilities, cleaning, and marketing and front of house consultations.

Rent is subtracted from each show’s box office sales, to mitigate up-front cost for Space Program participants. There will be a reconciliation at the end of the run to determine whether the box office is sufficient to cover, or if additional funds are needed, and there will be a two week grace period following the show’s close for the program participant to cover any additional funds due.

Security Deposit: At this time no security deposit is required.

Insurance: Space Program participants are responsible to provide their own insurance compliant with the building’s minimum limits.

Rehearsal Space: Space Program participants will have access to WP’s rehearsal space at 55 West End Avenue, when it is not occupied by WP’s own programming, at no cost.

Front of House and Box Office: WP provides consultation on best front of house practices. Space Program participants are required to use WP’s ticketing platform. WP will deduct rent owed from the box office balance (less processing fees) and remit any remaining funds at the end of the run. Space Program participants are responsible for engaging Front of House Staff and any COVID-19 safety personnel.

Marketing: WP’s marketing team will send out one dedicated eblast to WP’s list and will create up to 3 unique social media posts across our platforms during the course of the rental. All dates for posts and blasts are at WP’s discretion but will be scheduled in consultation with Space Program participants

Staff Support: A WP production liaison will be available to the Space Program participant’s production team while they are in residence in the theater. This person will not serve as the project’s Production Manager, but rather will help the team navigate the space and enforce house rules.

Additional Staff Support: Space Program participants can consult with WP staff on an as available basis. WP Artistic Staff will be available to consult with each team during the time the Space Program participants are in residence.

Printing/Copying: WP can provide script printing by appointment.

COVID-19 Protocol: We are aware that conditions are rapidly changing and will be adjusting safety policies and protocols accordingly.

Please note that this is just a brief summary of the program and full terms and conditions, including number of performances per week and hours in the space, shall be outlined in a full license agreement.
